Thermographic imaging was performed on 50 healthy volunteers randomly assigned to four different procedures:

  1. Acupuncture at Hegu L.I.4 with needle manipulation (as would be performed with a traditional acupuncture treatment).
  2. Needling of a cutaneous non-acupoint.
  3. Needling of a muscular non-acupoint.
  4. Needling of Hegu L.I. 4 without manipulation.

A significant increase in surface temperature occurred within two minutes of needling Hegu L.I. 4 with manipulation, whereas all other procedures resulted in a decrease of temperature in the monitored area.
