Study leaders, Fang-Rong Chang and Yang-Chang Wu worked to isolate certain groups of chemicals from plant extracts that showed a higher level of effectiveness in combating the H1N1 virus as compared to a prescription antiviral drug currently available for the flu.
The plant is known in China as 'Dung of the Devil' because it has a repulsive smell, although once cooked the root (the useful part) smells like onions.
Researchers hope that extracts from F. assa-foetida may serve as promising lead components for new drug development against influenza A (H1N1) viral infection.
