The National Institutes of Health-American Association for Retired Persons (NIH-AARP) Diet and Health Study looks at the links between various diet and lifestyle factors and a variety of diseases. Researchers used data from a cohort study, which began in 1995 and involves approximately 500,00 men and women aged 50 - 71 at baseline. Eating large quantities of red and processed meats was shown to increase the risk of developing a variety of cancers, and the risk was greater with increasing levels of consumption. This study backs up a number of earlier studies which suggest that levels of meat consumption should be minimal if we wish to lower our chances of developing cancer.
