Healthy sperm makes you live longer |

A study of 43,277 Danish men from 1961 to 2001 has found that high semen quality corresponds to a lower risk of dying and vice-versa. Greater longevity was found in men with greater total number of sperm (men with 40 million plus were 40% less likely to die during the study, higher sperm motility and better sperm morphology (75% or more normal sperm equated to 54% lower risk of dying). Better sperm also corresponded to a reduced risk of cancer, respiratory problems and digestive disease. (Am. J. Epidemiol., 1 September 2009;170:559-565).
I'm not sure what we are to make of this. My feeling is that the quality of sperm are reflecting lifestyle factors such as stress, diet, smoking and alcohol and drug intake. It certainly would emphasize the importance of getting our lifestyle factors right, not just for our fertility, but for our health and survival as well.
