Researchers in a multicentre randomised controlled trial compared acupuncture to two different placebo (sham) acupuncture methods. 175 patients received one session of real or sham treatment and were observed over a 24 hour period. True acupuncture showed a significant difference to the placebo group, with patients in the acupuncture group experiencing complete pain relief (40.7%) with no recurrence or intensification of pain (79.6%).
The authors conclude that acupuncture is more effective than sham in the treatment and prevention of acute migraine pain and that these findings support the notion that specific physiological effects distinguish genuine acupoints from non-points.
